HMI has its roots in the state of Texas, where many of the early theories and practices of Holistic Management were first introduced.

As a result of those efforts over 25 years ago, a group of Texans got together and formed Holistic Resource Management of Texas, later called HMI-Texas. Since those first days a quarter of a century ago, that group has contributed to solving the problems of degraded and fragmented land, dysfunctional water cycles and declining rural economies throughout Texas.

HMI's regional office in Texas is currently staffed by a Regional Director, a Regional Program Manager, and a Regional Administrative Associate – all headquartered in Johnson City.

The HMI-Texas group has:

  • Promoted a simple but effective way to restore land to full health and productivity.
  • Trained hundreds of ranchers, farmers and land managers in Holistic Management practices and helped them create healthy and profitable land-based enterprises to sustain their families and communities well into the future.
  • Produced hundreds of experiential "Lands-on-Learning" field days and events across the state of Texas to introduce the public to the critical importance of good land stewardship.
  • Grown a grassroots learning community of thousands of individuals who care about Texas land and ecosystems
  • Networked and collaborated with dozens of agricultural and environmental organizations to maximize impact.

Moving into the future

In 2010, the HMI-Texas Board of Directors and the HMI Board in New Mexico both voted to merge and have the Texas group become a regional office of Holistic Management International. This merge affords benefits to both parties:

  • Diversify, strengthen and expand the mix of products and services – utilize the best from both organizations
  • Build organizational capacity to increase overall efficiency and effectiveness for both organizations
  • Increase, stabilize and diversify funding streams for both organizations
  • Maximize resources without duplication
  • De-fragment the Holistic Management brand - support each other without barriers
  • The Texas Growth Initiative

In the face of continuing land degradation, fragmentation and watershed deterioration along with increasing challenges to ranching and farming enterprises, the merge enables HMI to step up our efforts considerably through an aggressive outreach and marketing strategy with a focus on Texas.

Texas Goals and Objectives

Our goal is to reach 1,000 Texas ranchers, farmers and land managers with education and training in Holistic Management. This means that over half a million acres of degraded land will be brought back to health to sustain farming and ranching families well into the future. The benefits to the overall environment extend well beyond the individual ranch/farm operations to surrounding communities and include:

  • Improved watersheds – increased water supply
  • Increased biodiversity
  • Increased carbon sequestration
  • Enhanced wildlife habitat
  • Offer a cohesive continuum of outreach, education, support and referral offerings to address a variety of needs and geographic regions.
  • Outreach through "Lands-on-Learning" Field Days will introduce people to Holistic Management by providing experiential learning on Holistically Managed properties.
  • Intensive training provided with Holistic Management classes taught by certified educators. These two day classes include Principles for Success, Financial Planning, Biological Monitoring, Grazing Planning and Land Planning.
  • Peer mentoring and on-going learning to create on-going support networks for learning and sharing ideas and techniques.
  • Customized training, contracted monitoring and other consulting services facilitated through the home office of Holistic Management International, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  • Develop a new emphasis on outreach to beginning farmers and ranchers
