  • Holistic Management® Individualized Certified Educator Program

Holistic Management International (HMI) now offers an individualized two-year Holistic Management® Certified Educator Training Program. This program is overseen by HMI, which engages experienced and knowledgeable Certified Educators to instruct and mentor the candidates through the program.

This two-year, self-directed training program provides a solid foundation in the principles and practice of Holistic Management and exposes you to a variety of effective ways to facilitate the learning process for others.

Each individualized program covers the same content areas and has similar requirements, but varies in structure. You can individualize your training by choosing where you will train and take advantage of the international travel and exposure that increase your learning opportunities.

HMI staff will work with you to carefully select your training/mentoring team to maximize your learning experience. You will also receive support from HMI staff throughout your two-year program as well as a thorough evaluation of your learning portfolio and recommendations for further learning.

    The Training Experience

The main content areas that you will be trained to teach are:
    1) Holistic Management® Decision-Making
    2) Holistic Financial Planning

In addition you will be trained to teach in two areas of your choice from the list below with independent study in the remaining two:
    3) Holistic Grazing Planning
    4) Holistic Land Planning
    5) Holistic Biological Monitoring
    6) Holistic Management® Policy Analysis & Design

Note: Independent study refers to no attendance in onsite training session or expectation of facilitation of these content areas. You will study these areas on your own and provide a learning portfolio to determine basic comprehension level.

For each content area you will have at least two days of onsite instruction with your instructor. You will then deepen your learning of this material and practice teaching it to your learning community before finally receiving an additional two days of assisting an instructor in that content area when you have been determined to be ready to do so. You also have the option of videotaping your facilitation of a given content area and receiving feedback from your mentor and instructor. Through out your training, you will work closely with your instructors and mentor to maximize your learning, engage with the Holistic Management network, and explore different learning techniques.

We pull from a wide pool of Certified Educator instructors and mentors so the training style is always innovative. HMI staff works closely with these instructors to make sure that key content is covered in each session. You must work with at least two different Certified Educators over the course of your training.

    Application

To be accepted into HMI’s Certified Educator Training Program, you must demonstrate a basic level of Holistic Management practice and training (see CETP application for more information). One of your letters of reference must be from a Holistic Management® Certified Educator from which you have received training. You must also have a learning community that will support you in your learning process and with whom you can practice your instruction.

    First Year

Your program mentor provides coaching when you need it through email, phone calls, and instruction. Your mentor will also either help you directly or identify support resources within the Holistic Management practitioner and educator network. You develop a learning plan that will evolve into a learning portfolio representing the work you have done to fulfill the program requirements. In your learning plan you identify the objectives you plan to meet and the strategies and action steps you will take to ensure you meet your objectives successfully. At the end of your first year, you complete a mid-term exam to determine your progress and where you need to further concentrate your efforts. You should complete your content training in this first year.

    Second Year

In this second year you must focus on fulfilling your learning plan objectives and developing your portfolio including the development of a case study. As during the first year, you communicate monthly with the Director of Educational Products and your program mentor. You must also complete your facilitation portion of the program.

Second year activities for your learning portfolio can include:
    • Providing pro bono workshops, training sessions, or consultations for individuals and organizations including your learning community.
    • Writing articles for publication
    • Integrating Holistic Management with another project, such as a Master’s Thesis
    • Developing Holistic Management projects locally
    • Creating marketing materials
    • Creating educational materials
    • Getting further training in areas that improve your facilitation skills (e.g.,mediation)
    • Gathering assessment of the work you have done
    • Developing your case study

    Certification

At the end of your second year you participate in an oral exit review with HMI staff, your program mentor, and another Certified Educator from HMI’s Technical Review Committee selected specifically for your area of specialization. Feedback from this review helps you as a Certified Educator. Once you have demonstrated competency in your oral exit review and have adequately documented your program efforts within your learning portfolio, including the completion of your case study, you will be identified as a Holistic Management® Certified Educator. Your name and contact information will be published in Holistic Management International publications and on our website.

From this point on you continue to have access to the resources listed above and will be eligible for referrals from HMI. You can also participate in training and consulting contracts with HMI as they arise and as skill or specialty area permits.

Most importantly, you are certified to teach Holistic Management and to market yourself as a Holistic Management® Certified Educator. This certification demonstrates that you have met the standards set forth by Holistic Management International to ensure the quality of the training or consulting services you provide. Certification is renewed annually each year.
