  • Dimbangombe College of Wildlife, Agriculture and Conservation Management

    In 2000, leaders from within the Hwange community approached the Africa Centre for Holistic Management® with the request that we establish a community college that would train their young people for jobs in the local tourism and safari industries.

    We accepted this challenge and initiated the first phase of the Dimbangombe College of Wildlife, Agriculture and Conservation Management in 2002, with a training program for game scouts.

    Soon afterward the College became the home of a variety of small community projects managed by the Africa Centre that grew to become our Community-Based Conservation Program.

    As a sign of its support for the College, which was formally accredited by Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education in early 2005, the government granted an additional 13,000 acres of land, which are contiguous to the Africa Centre’s 6,500-acre property. Obtaining this land filled an important need of the College because it gave the Africa Centre a more representative land area for research and training.

    When fully expanded, Dimbangombe College will:

    Train people from the Hwange community, and from elsewhere in the region, as licensed professional guides and hunters, and other tourism- and safari-related vocations where a background in Holistic Management® enhances employment opportunities.

    Train people from Nongovernmental Organizations (NGO’s) throughout the region in the development of holistically managed community-based conservation programs;

    Train current or aspiring professionals in wildlife management that integrates the needs and aspirations of the human communities that share their resource base with wildlife.

    A research program on community-based ecosystem monitoring, designed and led by faculty and graduate students of Tufts University, was initiated in 2002.
