Food Labels May Confuse More Than Educate

Do you really know what's in your food? Are you certain that your food was grown without pesticides, or your beef is really grass fed?

Sure, the label may say 'all natural,' but what does that really mean?  According to USDA standards, meat and poultry labeled as natural cannot contain artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives or other artificial ingredients.  This label does not do anything to inform the consumer on how the animal was raised, nor if hormones or antibiotics were used on the animal. Like the 'All Natural' label, food labels in general can be deceiving, particularly since many only tell consumers a small portion of the truth, with a lot of information misleading or omitted altogether.  Food & Water Watch has posted an informative article about how to better understand what food labels are telling us; or more importantly, what they're not telling us. The best way to find out how your food was grown or raised is to shop at a local farmer's market.  Take the time to get acquainted with the farmers and ranchers and learn about their production methods or how their livestock was raised.
