From Engineering to Regenerative Farming: Building Malaysia’s First Pasture-Raised Poultry System

For nearly 30 years, I ran a cooling tower engineering company in Malaysia. I was good at systems designing them, optimising them, making them work. I never imagined those same instincts would one day lead me to stand in a coconut grove at dawn, watching a thousand birds move across managed pasture, building soil biology one rotation at a time.
It started in 2023 with six chickens on a 7-acre coconut plantation in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. The land had been under conventional management monoculture coconuts, bare soil between the palms, no integration, no stacking. I looked at that land the way an engineer looks at an underperforming system: what’s missing, and how do we redesign it?
The answer came through Holistic Management.
Building the Silvopasture System
Holistic Management training under Brian Wehlburg at Inside Outside Management didn’t just give me grazing planning tools it rewired how I think about decision-making on the land. The Holistic Context framework forced me to define what I was actually managing toward: not maximum production, not maximum profit, but a quality of life built on healthy land, nutrient-dense food, and a farming model that could be taught and replicated across tropical Southeast Asia.
Today, Regenerative Farmers Malaysia operates a coconut-poultry silvopasture system roughly 1,000 pasture-raised birds under a rotational grazing model adapted for tropical conditions. The coconut palms provide canopy shade critical in equatorial heat, the birds cycle through managed paddocks on organic feed and healthy pastures, and the soil biology is building season by season.
This isn’t a copy-paste of a temperate model. Malaysian conditions demand local solutions tropical pasture species under the canopy, a rotation rhythm tuned to equatorial growing seasons where there’s no winter dormancy. The grass never stops, and neither do the management decisions.
We hold myGAP certification (Malaysia’s Good Agricultural Practice standard) and Certified Humane certification making us Malaysia’s first pasture-raised egg producer to achieve Certified Humane status. That certification forced us to formalise animal welfare standards, stocking densities, and handling protocols to international benchmarks.

From Farm to National Movement
The farm was never the end goal. It was the proof of concept.
In 2026, I founded Persatuan Pertanian Regeneratif Malaysia (PPRM) the Malaysian Regenerative Agriculture Association — the first registered regenerative agriculture association in the country. The official launch at Universiti Putra Malaysia was supported by Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), reflecting the government’s growing commitment to regenerative approaches as part of the national food security agenda.
PPRM exists to do what no single farm can: set national standards, develop practitioner competency frameworks, and build the institutional infrastructure that regenerative agriculture needs to scale across Malaysia and the ASEAN region.
That same month, I published Nutrient Density Starts in The Soil the first book on regenerative agriculture and pasture-raised poultry authored in Southeast Asia. It traces the connection from soil biology to nutrient-dense food production, grounded in the practical realities of tropical farming. The book isn’t academic theory. It’s what I’ve learned and what I got wrong building a regenerative system from scratch.

Holistic Management in the Tropics
Holistic Management in tropical Southeast Asia doesn’t look like Holistic Management on a 10,000-acre ranch in Montana. The principles are universal, but the application is radically different.
We’re working with smallholder-scale land, equatorial climate with no defined seasons, and coconut-palm silvopasture instead of open grassland. Every grazing plan, every infrastructure decision requires translating HM principles into a landscape and a farming culture that the textbooks never anticipated.
That translation work is what excites me most. Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is actively pursuing national food resilience through diversified, sustainable production systems. Regenerative agriculture with its emphasis on soil health, integrated livestock, and reduced input dependency aligns directly with that national direction. Holistic Management gives us the decision-making framework to deliver on it, one farm at a time, one practitioner at a time.
To the HMI Community
In the space of three years, I’ve built a certified farm, founded a national association, authored a book, and engaged my country’s agriculture ministry on regenerative policy. I’m not sharing that to impress anyone I’m sharing it because the tools work.
Holistic Management gave me a decision-making framework. The HMI community gave me a global network of practitioners who understand that this work is about more than farming it’s about restoring land, feeding people properly, and building systems that the next generation can inherit without apology.
If you’re a practitioner in the tropics, in a smallholder context, in a country where regenerative agriculture is still emerging reach out. The path exists. It’s just not paved yet.
