A Regenerative Strategy: Embracing an update to the Holistic Management® Framework

HMI Board and Staff are pleased to announce new revisions to the Holistic Management® Framework. We so appreciate the input from a broad spectrum of Holistic Management Educators who use the framework in their education and training.

HMI periodically reviews the Holistic Management® Framework to ensure that it is current, applicable and meaningful to as many people as possible. If you would like to comment on the changes to the framework we value your input and comments. This feedback contributes to the relevance and interpretation of the framework and its validity as a management and education tool.

Significant changes include:

1. The addition of a Principle - That management must be adaptive towards the Holistic Goal/Context

2. We have included both the terms of Holistic Goal and Holistic Context as our educators find that both terms are helpful to use for different audiences when developing this key component of the framework as a tool for making value-based decisions and managing for the triple bottom line.

3. The Statement of Purpose has been re-emphasized in the framework as a distinct component separate from, but connected to the Holistic Goal or Context developed. The Statement of Purpose only applies to a business or entity, as apposed to a family or an individual.

4. Under Ecosystem Management tools, the animal/living organism component was expanded to highlight the possibility and reality of using plants and small animals in management tool choices, beyond grazing ungulates.

5. Planning tools have been changed to Adaptive Planning Process and additional planning processes have been added to the list to note the full range of planning processes that are utilized within the framework and for which HMI has manuals and curriculum.

6. Testing Questions have been moved above Adaptive Management Processes and the testing question "Gut Check" has been changed to "Gut Feeling."

7. Under Feedback Loop Monitoring: Social, Ecological and Financial have been added to reinforce that monitoring is across these areas and not focused on ecosystem or biology alone.

HMI's Board approved these changes at their November 5th, 2024 meeting.

To learn more about these changes and improve your management team's ability to make decisions in line with your values and resource base, HMI's Online Foundation's Course starts on January 7, 2025.g.
