Instructions on how to use STAC.
Take a STAC reading every 5 steps and take 10 readings per area/transect (approximately 200 yards). Pick a point on the horizon and walk toward it taking your normal stride. At each reading, look down at your foot and determine if the height of dense grazeable material in the area adjacent to your boot’s arch is a S=Sole, T=Toe, A=Ankle, C=Calf, Th=Thigh, P=Pocket. Enter the code into column A so the spreadsheet can determine your current Animal or Stock Days per Acre/Ha. If you step on bare ground that counts as a 0. If part of your foot is on bare soil, you can .5 or .25 in column c, etc to note that you should divide the score by half or a reasonable fraction of the guideline. The spreadsheet will do the rest of the calculations for you to give you the average paddock rating. Remember to look at the bulk of the plant and not the highest point of the plant to determine the rating you give the plants’ available grazing estimate. You must ignore seed heads and stalks, focusing on the dense leaf material. If you look horizontally you are measuring at a level where you can’t see through the leaves.
